S-5-N Clamp Update

S-5-N ClampManufacturing Subtleties

Nail-strip profiles have become quite popular in recent years, primarily in residential and light commercial applications. There are numerous equipment manufacturers who produce the roll-forming machinery that in turn produce these panel profiles. Although these profiles all look very similar, there are subtle dimensional and other differences from one to the next. This makes our job a bit challenging in crafting an S-5 clamp solution that is engineered for maximum holding strength and fits most of these profiles given their subtle differences.

Making our job even more challenging is the fact that roll forming equipment manufacturers also make slight “tweaks” and dimensional changes in their roll tooling from time to time. So, it is possible that a profile that goes by the same name from the same manufacturer is slightly different today than it was a few years ago when our research and load testing was performed.

Such changes will not affect whether or not the S-5-N clamps will fit a previously tested seam profiling from the earlier machine or tooling version; however, there have been cases recently where minor changes in later versions of tooling have affected our clamp fitment.

Check Profile Width

The profiles that may be in question in general have slightly taller female seam dimensions or wider base dimensions than previous generation nail strip profiles. The clip relief (striations that are close to the seam), may prevent the S-5-N clamp from seating properly in some of these cases. In other cases, a panel bead or striation close to the seam can affect the S-5-N clamps seating properly. If the profile is wider than .56 inches at the base, the current S-5-N clamp may not fit over the seam. Please verify specific panel profiles and clamp strength via our load test tables.

If you believe that your nail strip profile is in question, please contact technical support and submit a ticket to receive a timely solution.

Next Steps

We are currently re-designing the S-5-N to fit these newer dimensions (while still fitting the old ones). The revised S-5-N will be available early 2019.  Meanwhile, the current S-5-N clamp will still fit the overwhelming majority of nail-strip profiles.
